Tom Hanks is expected to be the next movie star to come to Pittsburgh for a film project.
Sony confirmed that its TriStar Pictures division has decided to shoot “You Are My Friend,” a story that involves the life and influence of children’s television icon Fred Rogers, in the Pittsburgh area. The movie starring Hanks was announced in January.
A spokesman for Sony confirmed that “we are excited that ‘You Are My Friend’ has decided to film in the Pittsburgh region” and that the shoot will begin filming here in the fall.
The film production is expected to employ “hundreds of local crew and talent.”
The production comes with the state of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development recently allocating a film tax credit of $10.19 million to TriStar-affiliated Real Heaven Inc. designated for Allegheny County for “You Are My Friend.”
The story is about a journalist’s experience of doing story about Fred Rogersand is expected to be set in New York as well as Pittsburgh.
Sony has scheduled it for a fall 2019 release.
